Ingredients
Marie Rose (creamy): The British prawn-cocktail sauce: mayonnaise blended with a little ketchup, lemon and hot sauce into a pale pink, creamy dip.
- Whisk the mayonnaise with the smaller amount of ketchup, the lemon juice, Worcestershire and hot sauce until smooth and evenly pink. Serve with chilled shrimp on shredded lettuce.
Chipotle-lime: Smoky chipotle and lime take the sauce toward a Mexican-style shrimp cocktail. It’s great with avocado and cucumber.
- Stir the lime juice, the smaller amount of horseradish and the chipotle powder into the ketchup with the other ingredients. Chill 30 minutes so the chipotle blooms.

Instructions
-
Stir the ketchup, horseradish, lemon juice, Worcestershire and hot sauce together until evenly combined.
-
Taste and adjust: more horseradish for a sharper bite, more lemon for brightness, and a few grinds of pepper to finish.
-
Chill at least 30 minutes so the horseradish mellows into the sauce. Serve cold with shrimp, crab claws or oysters.
Tips for success
-
Quick shrimp cocktail: bring a pot of salted water with a halved lemon to a boil, add 1 lb (454 g) peeled shrimp, turn off the heat and let stand 3–4 minutes, until pink and opaque (145°F/63°C). Chill in ice water and drain.
-
Prepared horseradish loses its punch once the jar is opened; if yours is old, add an extra spoonful.
-
Use homemade sugar-free ketchup for the cleanest flavor, and check store-bought labels, since some “reduced sugar” ketchups still contain sugar.
Storage & meal prepMeal-prep friendly

- Doesn’t freeze well
Reheat: Serve cold
Prep tip: It keeps up to 2 weeks; stir and taste before serving, and add a little fresh horseradish if it has mellowed.
